The Japanese yen (JPY) is the currency of Japan, one of the major reserve currencies in the world. One Japanese yen is equal to 100 sen. The symbol for it is ¥. The existing banknote denominations are 1 000, 2 000, 5 000 and 10 000 yen.

The front side of all the Japanese yen banknotes pictures some well-known figures, writers and educators, who lived in Japan. The 1000 yen note depicts Natsume Sōseki, the 2 000 yen note depicts Murasaki Shikibu, the 5 000 yen note depicts Nitobe Inazō, and the 10 000 yen note depicts a portrait of Fukuzawa Yukichi.

Coins differ from each other not only in the pattern, but also in the material. Thus, 500, 100, and 50 Japanese yen are made of nickel, the 10 yen coin is made of bronze, and one yen is made of aluminum. The 5 and the 50 yen coins have a central hole.
