Turkish lira (TRY)

The Turkish lira (TRY) is the currency of Turkey. One lira is equal to 100 kurus. The existing banknote denominations are 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 lira. The coins are 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50 kurus and one lira.

During the transition period from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2008 the currency of Turkey was officially called New Turkish lira. In 2005 coins were introduced in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 new kurus and one new lira. One new kurus coin was struck of brass, the coins of 5, 10 and 25 new kurus were made of cupronickel alloy; the 50 new kurus coins and one new lira coins were bimetallic. All coins have various portraits of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Starting January 1, 2009, the official name of the currency of Turkey became «Turkish lira» again. A new series of coins and banknotes were introduced in denominations without the word «new» («yeni»).
